What are standards?

Standards are rules or test methods that reflect the current state of the art. Standards provide consumers with products that perform their function, are safe to use and have been tested according to defined testing and certification procedures.

How are standards created?

Experts from industry, public institutions and independent testing institutes from various countries are involved in the development and renewal of international standards. The standardization work is open, transparent and consensus-based and the documents produced are subject to a public objection/voting procedure. Experts work free of charge and on a voluntary basis to keep existing standards up to date and, where necessary, to develop new standardized rules. Standards can be used by legislators to specify laws and regulations, e.g. for product approvals (e.g. disinfectants or energy labels on household appliances).

Our contribution to good, safe and sustainable products

Swissatest is active in various international and national committees, such as the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC), International Standardization Organization (ISO), European Committee for Standardization / Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CEN/CENELEC), Swiss Electrotechnical Committee (CES), or VDA. Swissatest experts are actively involved in shaping existing and new standards for the performance testing of washing machines, dishwashers and the hygiene-related testing of household appliances. For important current topics such as the formation of microplastics in washing machines and dryers, test methods are developed in the standardization committees that will later lead to more sustainable and material-friendly appliance solutions.

By participating in standardization, Swissatest makes an important, free contribution to the good cleaning and hygiene performance of washing machines and dishwashers with the lowest possible water and energy consumption. Sustainability is our top priority. Clean and gently washed textiles can be used for longer, thus protecting the environment.

Another focus is cooperation in the area of test materials for surface testing, such as testing plastics or leather for automotive interiors. As a manufacturer of test materials and a test institute, Swissatest takes a neutral position in standardisation committees. Thanks to its own innovations in test material development, Swissatest has the right products for compliant and meaningful testing. Always with the aim of using the best technical solution.

Swissatest's work therefore makes a significant contribution to ensuring that many everyday products are durable, robust and able to cope with daily requirements. Swissatest thus makes a sustainable contribution to the careful use of resources.

Swissatest is proud to be officially certified according to the internationally recognized ISO 9100 and ISO 14100 standards, which underlines our continuous commitment to the highest quality standards and sustainable corporate management.
